Core Courses
NURS 500

Evolving Roles of the Advanced Practice Nurse

3 units This course explores the roles of advanced practice nurses in professional and organizational contexts. In the course, students will learn how to apply nursing theory and cultural competency to team-based environments. They’ll also learn effective collaboration and communication skills, tailored to health care settings. With that, students will analyze key issues and challenges affecting outcomes and learn how to be an effective organizational and systems leader.
NURS 501 Ethics, Policy, and Legal Implications for Advanced Practice Nursing 3 units In this course, students will examine the social, political, ethical, and economic structures of nursing practice. Alongside this, they’ll study the factors shaping access to safe, high-quality care in both domestic and global systems. The course also analyzes activism and advocacy in U.S. health care. Ethical reasoning is emphasized as the foundation for practice, policy, and economics, as well as for corollary laws, regulations, resource allocation, funding strategies, costs, budgeting, and outcomes.
NURS 502 Information Management for Advanced Nursing Practice 2 units This course provides students with an overview of information and data management in the context of nursing practice. Students will closely examine how information technology is used in clinical practice, administration, education, and research to disseminate health care knowledge, promote interprofessional communication, and optimize delivery and care. The course enhances knowledge and understanding of the ethical and legal considerations associated with application of informatics in health care and education settings. Selected software programs/applications are presented and used.
NURS 503 Science Development, Study Design, and Statistics 3 units Through scholarly inquiry, students will learn how to translate evidence into protocols and practice, while focusing on ethics, advocacy, and patient safety. Scholarly inquiry for this course includes systemic critical analysis, evaluation, synthesis, application, and research. By the end of the course, students will know how to formulate evidence-based recommendations using theoretical and empirical principles.
Science Core Courses
NURS 510 Pathophysiological Foundation for the Advanced Practice Nurse 3 units This course covers human physiology and pathophysiology, with an emphasis on clinical assessment, clinical diagnostic decision-making, and health care management. Students will analyze the ways in which various physiological systems change. They’ll also review the pathophysiology of health conditions across the life span, including those of special populations. The course also explores genetic, environmental, and clinical manifestations and responses to common diseases and altered health states. Clinical screening and diagnostic evaluative methods are also discussed.
NURS 511 Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning 3 units Building on previous program knowledge, this course covers advanced health assessments of clients, factoring in anatomy, physiology, pathology and more. Emphasis is placed on data, which students will learn to analyze and use, in tandem with other screening and diagnostic tests, to formulate differential diagnoses.
NURS 511L Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning Lab 1 unit In this lab course, students will apply the sophisticated skills and knowledge needed to perform comprehensive health assessments. The course presents techniques and guidelines for patients across the life span. Students will also learn how to compare normal human findings with deviations based on age, gender, ethnicity, and disease.
NURS 512 Pharmacological Foundation for the Advanced Practice Nursing 3 units This course, which focuses on common health conditions, provides the knowledge and skills needed for clinical application of advanced pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic decision-making in drug selection, taking into consideration the client’s personal health, culture, and finances. Also examined: prescriptive practice, client education, and monitoring of the therapeutic response to pharmacological agents in diverse clients across the lifespan.
Nursing Education Courses
NURS 560 Theories of Teaching and Instruction in Nursing 3 units This course examines important pedagogical theories and instructional models for the classroom, nursing skill laboratories, and clinical education. In the course, students will discuss and analyze behaviorist, social interactionist, and cognitive approaches, as well as adult learning theories. Evidence-based research relative to nursing education is reviewed and critiqued.
NURS 561 Teaching and Learning Strategies in Nursing 3 units

This course focuses on providing mentored training in integrating evidence-based, learning-centered teaching and learning strategies. Students are teamed with faculty mentors in the classroom, skill laboratory and clinical settings to apply and implement learned teaching strategies under the direct supervision of faculty mentors. Special emphasis is made on integrating multiculturalism in teaching and learning.

NURS 562 Curriculum Development in Nursing 3 units Curriculum principles and strategies that incorporate accrediting nursing bodies curricular essentials are presented. Concerns associated with associate, baccalaureate and graduate nursing degrees curricula are addressed and differentiated with reference to accrediting bodies curricular essentials requirements and with reference to certifying state regulators. Emphasis is placed on integrating the interplay of curricular systematic decision making, curriculum planning, curriculum development, systematic assessment of outcomes, and accreditation requirements/self-study.
NURS 563 Evaluation and Assessment in Nursing Educations 3 units

This course explores various theories on assessments and evaluation, and examines important theoretical, ethical and practical issues in assessment, evaluations, measurement and testing in nursing education.

NURS 664 Strategies in Nursing Education 3 units/practicum This course provides mentored training on evidence-based, learning-centered teaching and learning strategies. This practicum course is completed with a nurse educator preceptor in a selected setting (classroom, skills and simulation laboratory, clinical practice). The course also helps students refine educational expertise in their selected areas of interest (e.g. assessment of learning needs, program/curriculum planning, implementation, and assessment/evaluation in either a traditional or nontraditional setting). Through this practicum, students can begin integrating the role of the nurse educator into their professional behaviors.
NURS 697 Directed Comprehensive Studies/Exam 1 unit The comprehensive final examination is designed to test the student’s ability to integrate and apply knowledge from the core areas of nursing to a specialty area. This examination compels the student to rise above individual courses to reach a comprehensive understanding of theory and principles of the nursing discipline and his/her area of specialty; and to use the knowledge gained in individual courses as the foundation from which such comprehensive understanding is reached. The schedule of this one-unit course is composed of 5 class sessions of 3 hours each to assist and guide students’ integrative learning and synthesis. Comprehensive examination must be taken after students have completed all units of study and successfully completed it before the award of a degree.
