3 units | This course explores the roles of advanced practice nurses in professional and organizational contexts. In the course, students will learn how to apply nursing theory and cultural competency to team-based environments. They’ll also learn effective collaboration and communication skills, tailored to health care settings. With that, students will analyze key issues and challenges affecting outcomes and learn how to be an effective organizational and systems leader. |
| NURS 501 | Ethics, Policy, and Legal Implications for Advanced Practice Nursing | 3 units | In this course, students will examine the social, political, ethical, and economic structures of nursing practice. Alongside this, they’ll study the factors shaping access to safe, high-quality care in both domestic and global systems. The course also analyzes activism and advocacy in U.S. health care. Ethical reasoning is emphasized as the foundation for practice, policy, and economics, as well as for corollary laws, regulations, resource allocation, funding strategies, costs, budgeting, and outcomes. |

| NURS 510 | Pathophysiological Foundation for the Advanced Practice Nurse | 3 units | This course covers human physiology and pathophysiology, with an emphasis on clinical assessment, clinical diagnostic decision-making, and health care management. Students will analyze the ways in which various physiological systems change. They’ll also review the pathophysiology of health conditions across the life span, including those of special populations. The course also explores genetic, environmental, and clinical manifestations and responses to common diseases and altered health states. Clinical screening and diagnostic evaluative methods are also discussed. |

In the course, students will discuss and analyze behaviorist, social interactionist, and cognitive approaches, as well as adult learning theories. Evidence-based research relative to nursing education is reviewed and critiqued. |

Students are teamed with faculty mentors in the classroom, skill laboratory and clinical settings to apply and implement learned teaching strategies under the direct supervision of faculty mentors. Special emphasis is made on integrating multiculturalism in teaching and learning. |

Concerns associated with associate, baccalaureate and graduate nursing degrees curricula are addressed and differentiated with reference to accrediting bodies curricular essentials requirements and with reference to certifying state regulators. | NURS 664 | Strategies in Nursing Education | 3 units/practicum | This course provides mentored training on evidence-based, learning-centered teaching and learning strategies. This practicum course is completed with a nurse educator preceptor in a selected setting (classroom, skills and simulation laboratory, clinical practice). The course also helps students refine educational expertise in their selected areas of interest (e.g. assessment of learning needs, program/curriculum planning, implementation, and assessment/evaluation in either a traditional or nontraditional setting). Through this practicum, students can begin integrating the role of the nurse educator into their professional behaviors. |
| NURS 697 | Directed Comprehensive Studies/Exam | 1 unit | The comprehensive final examination is designed to test the student’s ability to integrate and apply knowledge from the core areas of nursing to a specialty area. This examination compels the student to rise above individual courses to reach a comprehensive understanding of theory and principles of the nursing discipline and his/her area of specialty; and to use the knowledge gained in individual courses as the foundation from which such comprehensive understanding is reached. The schedule of this one-unit course is composed of 5 class sessions of 3 hours each to assist and guide students’ integrative learning and synthesis. Comprehensive examination must be taken after students have completed all units of study and successfully completed it before the award of a degree. |
